Amazon are being very bashful when it comes to sales figures for their Amazon Kindle e-book reader. Even so, there can be little doubt that they are delighted with the performance of the Kindle to date. The first Kindle was released in Novemeber 2007 and amazon’s shelves were empty less than six hours later. The Kindle didn’t return to stock until April 2008.

A paper issued by the New Democratic Leadership Council – a Washington think tank – proposes that every single one of America’s K12 school children should be furnished with an electronic book reader. Thomas Freedman’s paper entitled “A Kindle In Every Backpack” also suggests that this would result in lower costs and facilitate almost constant updating of academic texts.
