The first ham radio that was distributed for sale was at some point during the 1920′s. The first one that worked without wires came out twenty years later, people could use it so that they were able to speak to each other, and send important information if needed. It was used in a similar way as you would a walkie talkie, however the ham radio has many more benefits, for one it has a much wider range. Since the first one was created modern technology has advanced yet they are still going strong.

The cost to keep in touch with those who are not close by can prove expensive, even the line rentals as well as the equipment needed for internet communications would work out more expensive than this method of communication. The price of long distance calls is still high and being able to keep in touch via a ham radio is still the cheapest option. The frequencies used are the same as the ones radio stations use, although not on the same ones, such frequencies are so reliable that they are still used by the emergency services.

Although there is a lot of technology available today, in emergency situations people are still reliant on ham radio’s if such technology fails as this is a much more reliable way to keep in touch. It is not hard to believe that many believed that ham radio would become insignificant when the internet hit it off but this was not the case.

This was in fact much further than the truth. Both technologies, both the new one the internet and the older one, ham radio has been brought together and they both compliment each other well. The way this works is it helps to connect ham radio operators with a better connection signal, therefore together they have become a good communication source and would not be so good without each other.

Available for those of you who like gadgets and like to know how things work, you could build a ham radio from scratch with a special kit that contains everything you would need. This also has the added advantage of allowing you to understand the workings if their were simple repairs to be done.

The difference between a ham radio and a commercial radio is that a commercial radio and the people who use it do so in order to make money where as the ham radio is not a profit making device it is a free way to communicate once you have paid for the initial equipment.

You do need a special license to broadcast on a ham radio but as it is non profit you are able to use more frequencies than if you were to use a C. B or similar. This product has been around for many many years and is not going anywhere, what ever you wish to use it for you can be sure that whether for fun or practical reasons you will be pleased with your purchase.
